Safety Valve vs Relief Valve: Key Differences
Safety and relief valves both protect pressure systems but function differently. Know their main differences and uses.
Safety valves and relief valves both exist to protect a system from dangerous overpressure, and the terms are often used loosely, but they are engineered to respond differently. A safety valve is designed for compressible fluids — steam or gas — and opens rapidly, "popping" fully open once the set pressure is reached to release pressure quickly and then reseating once pressure drops to a safe level. This fast, full-lift action suits gas and steam systems where a slow release would not vent pressure fast enough.
A relief valve, by contrast, is generally used on liquid systems (such as hot water or hydraulic lines) and opens gradually and proportionally to the amount of overpressure, throttling open just enough to relieve the excess and closing again as pressure normalizes. This gradual response is well suited to liquids, which are largely incompressible and do not need — and should not have — a sudden full-bore discharge.
In practice, many valves marketed as "safety relief valves" combine both behaviors, but the underlying distinction remains: safety valves are about rapid, full response for compressible media; relief valves are about proportional, controlled response for liquids. Choosing the right type, correctly sized and set for the system's working pressure, is essential for protecting pipework, boilers and equipment from damage.
