Radiator valves control the flow of hot water into a radiator and come mainly in two body configurations: straight and angled. The difference is purely about the geometry of the pipework they connect to, not the valve's internal function.
A straight valve connects to a pipe that runs directly in line with the valve body — typically where pipework rises straight up from the floor into the bottom of the radiator, or where the pipe enters horizontally in the same plane as the radiator connection. An angled valve turns the flow through roughly 90 degrees, and is used where pipework comes up from the floor but the radiator tapping is horizontal (or vice versa), letting the valve itself perform the bend instead of needing an extra elbow fitting.
Choosing the right pattern comes down to how your pipework is routed: measure the direction the supply pipe runs relative to the radiator's valve tapping before selecting straight, angled, or (for pipework running along the skirting) angled-corner variants. Using the correct pattern gives a neater, more compact installation, avoids unnecessary extra fittings and joints, and reduces the number of potential leak points in the heating system.
